Original Unframed Painting of Sovereign of the Seas by J. Augustus Murphy, c1930
Available is an original oil painting of a clipper ship, signed J. Augustus Murphy. This is a beautiful nautical scene of a three-masted ship in full sail.
The ship is named "Sovereign of the Seas", as seen written on the side of the ship. The Sovereign of the Seas was a clipper ship built in 1852, famous for setting a world record as the fastest sailing ship in 1854.
The painting is oil on board, with a wide range of blues and greens and detailed brushwork. It is signed "J. Augustus Murphy" on the bottom left hand corner.
The back of the board has a handwritten label reading "J.A. Murphy, 36 Glenville Ave., Allston, Mass., Suite 12." A manufacturer label reads "Devoe Canvas Boards".
No other information on the artist was found, except for a mention of his work "Chester, N.H." in a Boston Globe article about an art exhibit by the Businessmen's Art Club of Boston on April 30, 1936 (https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-boston-globe-businessmens-club-exhi/145680471/).
Painting is unframed; slight bowing of the board noted with some water stains on back edge.
