Antique Bachelor's Puzzle Variation Pink and Blue Quilt, c1900

A lovely lightweight quilt with lots of farmhouse charm - and a humility block to look for!

MATERIALS

The quilt is constructed in a variation of the Bachelor's Puzzle pattern, with the shoo fly blocks rotated 45 degrees. A charming array of burgundy and turkey red, solid and double pink, and cadet and indigo blue fabrics used with alternate blocks and sashing of black sprig on white ground shirting fabrics. 

Lightweight thin cotton batting. White muslin backing. Knife edge binding with solid pink fabric. Hand quilted with white thread in parallel lines and hanging diamond grids. 

One block has a misplaced triangle - sometimes these mistakes were done intentionally as 'humility blocks', to remind the quilt maker to not aim too hard for perfection, as God alone is perfect.

CONDITION

Good antique condition. Binding has scattered wear and fraying. A few spots with fabric thinning and exposed batting. The backing has one open hole and a few discolored stains. Still suitable for light use. Batting is thin and shifted.

This quilt has been carefully hand washed and air dried.

Exact date of construction and maker unknown. Based on fabrics used, estimated date c1900.

Measures 78" x 77".
