Antique Brown Transferware Ironstone Platter, Italian by Bodley & Sons, c1880s Rare Italianate Pattern
Antique Brown Transferware Ironstone Platter, Italian by Bodley & Sons, c1880s Rare Italianate Pattern
This is a gorgeous antique ironstone platter with an intricate brown transferware design, heavy with Italianate motifs. The platter is a stunning collector's piece in a pattern I have not found anywhere online. The rim has four portrait medallions in Renaissance costume, one set on each side, surrounded by flourishes and cherubs.
The backstamp reads 'Italian E.F.B. & Son'. There is also an impressed mark that reads "Bodley & Son No. 2, 9 85". Edward F. Bodley & Sons produced pottery under this mark in the 1880s, which indicated a production date around 1885 that correlates with the mark.
No crazing or chips. A few small orange marks on the back. Overall excellent antique condition for a rare collector's piece.
DIMENSIONS - 12" long by 9.75" wide; weighs 1 lb. 14 oz.
