Antique Churn Dash Inside Garden Maze Quilt
Antique Churn Dash Inside Garden Maze Quilt
A visually dynamic quilt in strong primary colors with an unusual sashing arrangement. This is a great display piece for its colors and geometric design.
MATERIALS
The quilt is handpieced in the Garden Maze sashing pattern with churn dash blocks in the center. The sashing is in solid red fabric, with the churn dash pieces in warm tans, dark browns, and indigo blue. The setting blocks are white. Hand bound in red fabric. Solid white muslin backing. Medium weight cotton batting. Hand quilted in white thread in fan quilting pattern.
CONDITION
Good antique condition. Brown fabrics show scattered fabric thinning and dye run, especially on the tan fabrics, with surrounding light stains.
Backing has several large light stains and one small scorch mark and hole into the backing. Light wear on binding.
The quilt has not been washed, because of the apparent unstable dye and fabric fragility. I do not recommend wetting this quilt, just hanging outside in the sun, face down, on a breezy day.
AGE
Exact date of construction and maker unknown. Based on fabrics used, estimated date c1890. Found in northeast Kansas.
SIZE
Measures 84" x 66".
