Antique Double X Black and Pink Quilt with Feedsack Backing, c1900
Antique Double X Black and Pink Quilt with Feedsack Backing, c1900
A carefully pieced early quilt with indigo print backing and strong contrasting colors
MATERIALS
The quilt is in the Double X pattern. Patchwork consists of black and brown fabrics with bright textured overlays, set in white fabric. Look for the one "oops" block, rotated opposite from all the others.
Sashing is salmon pink with small red polka dot pattern. Hand quilted in white thread in grid pattern, with maker marks still visible. Bound front to back with the polka dot fabric. Medium weight cotton batting.
Backing is solid white muslin with indigo feed sack stamps.
CONDITION
Good vintage condition. This quilt got a quick wash because of heavy soiling, during which the indigo stamps bled through to the front of the quilt. This is faint but visible. Tanning and some dirt lines still visible, since the quilt could not be fully soaked. Fabric is in overall good condition. Please review all photos.
AGE
Exact age unknown. Likely made circa 1900 based on fabrics used. From a private collection in Kansas City, MO.
SIZE
Measures 72" x 68".
