Racing Horse Antique French Conversation Plate

Available is a single antique French conversation plate, showing several racing horses at the starting line of their course.

The finely etched picture in black is set on white, with a sponged dark maroon border over raised details along the edge of the plate. It reads "Les Courses" at top, and "le signal du depart" at bottom. Back is stamped "Pexonne".

French conversation plates were popular decorative items throughout Europe in the 19th century. Plates were usually issued in sets of 6-12, with each plate showing a unique scene. Common themes included military events, provincial life, fables and legends, religious stories, and historical figures.

Today they make charming wall accents and hutch displays, continuing their role as conversation starters for a new generation of antique lovers.
