Antique Hexagon Six-Point Star Block Quilt, c1880
Antique Hexagon Six-Point Star Block Quilt, c1880
A stunning quilt with a beautiful range of 19th century fabrics and unusual quilting pattern - don't miss the photo of the backing to appreciate it.
MATERIALS
The quilt is hand pieced in a six point star set in a hexagon block, with brown and gray plaid setting fabrics, giving it the appearance of a small star within a larger star. The two long quilt edges have a simple sawtooth border. Binding is a red gingham fabric, hand finished, with rounded corners.
It is hand quilted in white thread in an unusual large cable design or twisted fan design, best viewed in the backing photo. Medium weight cotton batting. Brown homespun backing.
CONDITION
Very good antique condition. Scattered fading in fabrics, especially along center fold line. Some fabric thinning in a few places and one small tear near the bottom border where a block has separated from the binding. The backing has a few small holes and dark stains.
The quilt has not been washed. I do not recommend wetting this quilt, just hanging outside in the sun, face down, on a breezy day.
AGE
Exact date of construction and maker unknown. Based on fabrics used, estimated date c1880. Found in northeast Kansas.
SIZE
Measures 78" x 68".
