Available is a beautifully constructed quilt in warm autumnal colors. It is an excellent example of an 1880s quilt in a nine patch on point pattern.

MATERIALS

The patchwork is in a nine patch on point pattern, set in an unusual pieced zig zag border. Each square of the nine patch measures 1.25" and are made of a mix of printed fabrics, with Lancaster Blue, overdyed green, double pinks, and madder brown, among others. The setting blocks are white cotton with small black sprig.

The border is pieced with two small borders of brown (possibly a fugitive purple dye) and white fabrics, against a wider border of pieced zig zag in white fabric against triangles of brown fabrics.

There is dense double rod quilting that is even better studied from the back. Each square is quilted within itself, with parallel lines in the setting blocks and diagonal lines on the border.

The batting is medium weight cotton. Backing is two pieces of solid white muslin. Binding is hand finished with butted corners, done with the white setting fabric. Hand quilted and hand pieced with white thread.

CONDITION

Good antique condition. There are multiple patches of the brown fabric with dye rot and exposed batting. Some patches appear to have been replaced, with overstitching present.

Light tanning along the horizontal fold line on the back.

There are 3 noticeable brown areas, where it appears the dye has run from the fabrics. This is mostly noticed in the corners and bottom edge. Because of this, the quilt has not been washed and has only been aired out.

AGE

Estimated date of construction - 1880s, based on fabrics and techniques used. Maker unknown. Found in southeast Kansas.

SIZE

Measures 83" x 62". Note it was photographed on a king size bed.
