Antique Pink and Brown Basket Quilt with Fussy Cut Binding, c1880
Antique Pink and Brown Basket Quilt with Fussy Cut Binding, c1880
A beautiful antique quilt in pink and brown with an unusual printed binding.
MATERIALS
The quilt is constructed in a pieced basket pattern with printed calicos making up the basket triangles and an applique handle, set in white fabrics, with double pink alternate blocks. The binding is white with a pink pattern printed on it, possibly a 'fussy cut', where the maker carefully cut strips of printed fabric for the binding to maintain the print. Medium weight cotton batting. Solid white backing.
Hand pieced and quilted in white thread - hanging diamond over the alternate blocks and echo quilting in the baskets, with a few blocks quilted over in brown.
Lovely mix of late 19th century fabrics in purple, madder brown, shirting fabrics and even a rare stable double purple print.
CONDITION
Good antique condition. Several blocks with fabric thinning present. Tanning on edges. Otherwise clean and intact. It has not been washed but is free of odors.
AGE
Exact date unknown. Based on fabric and technique, estimated date made is circa 1880. It came from a private quilt collection in Kansas City, MO.
SIZE
Measures 84" x 84".
