Antique Pink and Green Quilt, Churn Dash Monkey Wrench, c1900, 83" x 68"

This is a lovely antique quilt with wear and tear that retains some incredible details of hand quilting and fabrics. The pink and green calicos, along with patriotic calico prints. It is still a wonderful display piece or wall hanging quilt. I did not wash this quilt, due to concerns with fabric fragility. Although it has several flaws, it is a wonderful piece for a collector or maker.

MATERIALS

The churn dash patches are all of overdyed green calico - except for one single patch, which is made with red checked fabric and patriotic fabrics. Don't miss the photos! The setting blocks are made of alternating colors of pink in green in double pink and white shirting fabrics with tiny prints, except for the patriotic fabrics and one block that uses chrome yellow. The symmetry when viewed from a distance is very pleasing to the eye.

The sash is double bar green and cinnamon pink, set with dark brown Lemoyne stars that may be a fugitive purple. The binding has been repaired at some point and is a mix of red and orange paisley and red homespun. The backing is made of panels of dark khaki colored cotton fabric. It has medium weight cotton batting. There is a mix of hand and machine piecing visible. It is hand quilted with brown and white quilting threads.

CONDITION 

Multiple flaws and signs of wear. The front is mostly intact, with mild fabric thinning noted on a few stars. Discolorations noted on two edges, approximately quarter sized, untreated. Also a few light brown spots on the white setting blocks. The binding has fraying throughout. Mild fading noted along center fold line.

On the backing there is shredding and exposed batting with one finger-sized whole cloth hole. Scattered marks on the backing. Note that this quilt was not washed by me due to concerns with batting loss. It has been aired out in the sun, face down, for two days to eliminate any storage odors.

AGE 

Based on fabrics and quilting, this quilt is estimated to have been made circa 1900.

SIZE 

83" x 68"; would fit a modern twin bed, or work as an accent blanket or wall hanging.
