Antique Pink and Green Sawtooth Variation Quilt, c1870
Antique Pink and Green Sawtooth Variation Quilt, c1870
A completely unique pattern in an early quilt, this is a stunner to study and enjoy.
MATERIALS
The quilt is constructed in an unnamed pattern with sawtooth triangles in an hourglass configuration with a center square. These are set in alternating directions, creating a pattern of squares and diamonds throughout the quilt.
Fabrics used in blocks are double pink and overdye green prints; setting blocks are tiny black spray on white ground, possibly shirting fabric. Backing is solid white muslin. Bound back to front.
Quilted in white thread - hanging diamond over the setting blocks and parallel double lines over the blocks.
Border is double rows of green and pink fabrics. Medium weight cotton batting.
CONDITION
Good antique condition. There are several original mends. Several light stains that did not come out with washing. A few areas of torn fabric with exposed batting in the front, especially in one block that has a corresponding stain front and back. Black singe marks on backing. See photos. It has been carefully hand washed and air dried.
AGE
Exact date unknown. Based on fabric and technique, estimated date made is circa 1870. It came from a private quilt collection in Kansas City, MO.
SIZE
Measures 79" x 57".
