Antique Red and Green Irish Chain Quilt, c1880s, 74" x 73"

A lovely late 19th century handmade antique quilt in vibrant red and green colors.

MATERIALS

This quilt is made of beautiful fabrics in a double pink floral print, turkey red with yellow and green print, and dotted green overdyed fabric. The quilt is hand pieced, hand bound and hand quilted in white thread at 6-7 stitches per inch in a grid pattern. It has lightweight cotton batting. The backing is made of homespun red, brown and cream plaid fabric. 

CONDITION

There is significant fabric loss across the turkey red with exposed batting. Fraying is noted to binding. However the quilt remains overall intact and no whole cloth holes were noted. This quilt has not been washed due to concerns of fabric fragility, but is free of odors.

It measures 74" x 73".

AGE

Exact age unknown, but based on materials and quilting techniques used, estimated date of production is circa 1880.

This quilt is a wonderful example of 1800s craftsmanship, dye techniques and fabrics, and would be a wonderful display quilt during Christmas as a wall hanging or in a stack, or carefully repurposed as a cutter project quilt.
