This well-worn antique quilt has a delightful array of sampler blocks in warm neutral colors. Despite its flaws, it provides lots of fabrics and piecework to study, and even a signature in one block.

MATERIALS

The quilt is constructed of 36 blocks in a wide variety of patterns, with few repeated. The fabrics are a mix of late 19th century solid and printed cotton, set in striped sashing. It is hand quilted in white thread in a zig zag pattern over most of the quilt, with a few blocks quilted in unique motifs.

One block (see top row, second from the left) has a signed name in the block, possibly last name "Marvin."

There is very lightweight cotton batting and solid white cotton backing. No binding left (see condition).

CONDITION

Fair antique condition. Significant fading of fabrics and multiple blocks with fabric thinning and exposed batting. Small tear in top binding; small dark stains showing on backing. Binding is completely worn through.

Because of the fragility of the fabric, it has not been washed. It does have a dusty smell. I do not recommend purchasing if you have severe dust allergies. It can be aired out on a windy day in the sun to help with cleaning; I do not recommend wetting the fabric.

AGE

Exact date of construction and maker unknown. Based on fabrics used, estimated date c1880. Found in northeast Kansas.

SIZE
