Antique Touching Stars Quilt, c1880

A visually dynamic antique quilt in warm neutral tones, with an unusual staggered placement of six-point stars.

MATERIALS

The quilt is constructed in a staggered pattern of six-point Touching Stars. The stars are pieced in diamonds of madder brown, double pink, and paisley calico. Set in off white cotton blocks. Hand quilted in double line hanging diamond pattern. Knife edge white binding, hand applied.

Backing is white muslin, with one edge made of very light blue printed feed sack fabric that reads "St. Louis" (difficult to see in the photos). Lightweight cotton batting.

CONDITION

Good antique condition. There is significant tanning and staining along all edges of the quilt and in the backing along the fold lines. One small hole near bottom edge on backside, and another within a front block. Small holes in front along center fold line. Scattered storage stains on back.

The quilt has not been washed. I do not recommend wetting this quilt, just hanging outside in the sun, face down, on a breezy day.

Measures 81" x 71".
