A graphic and bold colored antique quilt with a unique design, possibly made from a papercut pattern. This quilt displays well on the wall for holidays or all year round.

MATERIALS

The quilt is an applique pattern in Turkey Red fabric set on white fabric. The nine applique patches are hand sewn and have a design that appears to be original and made from a papercut pattern - think of cutting up snowflakes as a child, with the paper folded in fourths then cut. As you unfold it, you see a mirrored image emerge. This method was popular in the mid to late 1800s in quilt making.

It is densely hand quilted in white thread in tight fan pattern, with an almost stipple effect. It is light to medium weight with cotton batting and white binding.

CONDITION

Excellent antique condition. A few scattered storage stains and some surface wear. One open area on the binding. See photos. This quilt has been aired out but not washed. It is free of strong odors.

AGE

Exact date unknown. Based on fabric and technique, estimated date made is circa 1850. It came from a private quilt collection in West Des Moines, Iowa.

SIZE

Measures 72" x 71".
