Antique Barn Raising Log Cabin Quilt, c1890
Antique Barn Raising Log Cabin Quilt, c1890
A vibrant quilt with late 19th century fabrics worth studying in a dynamic pattern, this piece displays beautifully on the wall or bed.
MATERIALS
The quilt is constructed in the Barn Raising Log Cabin pattern, with carefully designed blocks of machine pieced strips set into alternating rows of yellow and red fabrics. The fabrics have some incredible chrome yellow prints, red and blacks, burgundy, indigo, cadet blue and even purple with white polka dot patterns. Fabrics still have a nice sheen to them and feel unwashed.
Hand quilted in white thread in Baptist fan pattern. Medium weight cotton batting. Backing is off-white muslin. Bound back to front, machine finished.
CONDITION
Overall good condition. Please note in the photo collages - one block has some poorly done historical repairs. It appears that reproduction fabrics were used to repair one block with damage, and these are not a perfect match. Seam separation present in that block. A sympathetic restoration to that area would be an easy repair.
Otherwise, scattered storage stains. Some fabric thinning in the white strips. Review all photos, and please request more photos and information if needed. This quilt has not been washed by me due to fabric age.
AGE
Exact age and maker unknown. Estimated date of construction c1890 due to fabrics used.
