Antique Red and Overdye Green California Rose Applique Quilt c1880s, 90" x 67"
Antique Red and Overdye Green California Rose Applique Quilt c1880s, 90" x 67"
This generously sized antique quilt is a wonderful display piece to add to your quilt collection. The densely stitched triple line quilting adds texture, and the faded overdye green is a beautiful nod to historical dye techniques. This classic applique pattern is named California Rose (see Brackman's Encyclopedia of Applique, 11.831).
MATERIALS
The quilt is constructed with white setting fabric and green, pink and red applique in blocks and in borders of buds and vines along the edge of the quilt. It is hand quilted in dense triple lines set 1/4" apart in a cross hatch pattern across the quilt in white thread at 8 stitches per inch.
The batting is lightweight cotton. The backing is solid white muslin. The binding is hand finished in matching green fabric
CONDITION
Overall excellent antique condition. There is scattered fabric thinning and fading of the red fabrics consistent with age. The green fabrics show evidence of an overdye used, with mottled green and blue coloring, common with green overdye fabrics when a combination of blue and yellow were used to dye. Two sides of the border applique vines have near complete color loss and fading. There is one quarter-sized very light brown discoloration pointed at in photos. Mild wear noted on the binding. Light toasting noted on white fabrics.
This quilt has not been washed; it was given a sun bath and airing.
AGE
Exact age unknown. Based on fabrics and quilting techniques, estimated date is circa 1880s.
SIZE
90" x 67" - this quilt displays beautifully on a larger bed thanks to its generous width. Note - quilt was photographed on a king size bed.
