Antique Unfinished Hexagon Mosaic 1900s Quilt Top, Silk and Velvet English Paper Piecing, 54" x 53"
Antique Unfinished Hexagon Mosaic 1900s Quilt Top, Silk and Velvet English Paper Piecing, 54" x 53"
This amazing antique unfinished quilt top would be a stunning piece to hang on your wall as textile art. It is constructed of hundreds of 1.5" hexagons with English paper piecing technique, adding historical value and interest.
MATERIALS
This is an unfinished quilt top, without backing, batting or binding. The top is constructed of 1.5" hexagons from silk and velvet fabrics, both patterned and solid colored. They are hand pieced using English paper piecing in a hexagon mosaic pattern. View all the photos to see a glimpse of the scraps used - pieces of letters, newspapers, and even a postmark with the date of 1900. The edges of the top have loose serge stitching in place.
CONDITION
There are several spots of fabric loss and thinning, consistent with age. Some silks have shattered. This piece is fragile and should be handled with care. It has not been washed, and I recommend this as a display piece or use for studying fabrics.
AGE
Exact age unknown. Based on fabrics and the papers used in piecing, estimated date is no older than 1900.
DIMENSIONS
Measures 54" x 53" - a perfect size to use for wall display.
