Antique Red and Tan New Four Patch c1880s Quilt, 78" x 75"

A stunning collector's quality antique quilt in an unusual pattern, this piece comes ready for display with a hanging sleeve on the back. This quilt came from a collector's home in southeast Kansas and has been kept in excellent condition. The unusual pattern has several names - Buckeye Beautiful (Malone's 5500 Quilt Block Designs) or New Four Patch (Carrie Hall Blocks).

MATERIALS

The quilt is constructed in red and tan solid cotton fabrics. The tan was originally a fugitive green synthetic dye that has now faded. The red retains its brilliant color. It is set in white fabrics, with a solid border of matching fabrics.

The hand quilting is done in white thread at 8 stitches per inch, with echo quilting in the patchwork and 1/2" grid quilting  in the setting blocks. See photos for the still-visible pencil marks by the maker. It is machine bound with matching tan/brown fabric. The backing is solid white muslin, and batting is lightweight cotton.

There is a large hanging sleeve attached with basting stitches to the back. This can be easily removed by hand or left as is for easy displaying.

CONDITION 

Overall excellent antique condition. There are scattered age spots on the front and toasting of the whites, with a small pinhead brown spot on the front and another on the back. Some uneven stitching on the binding noted on the back. This quilt has been given a sun bath only.

AGE 

Exact age unknown. However, based on fabrics and techniques used, estimated date is no earlier 1880, based on the fugitive dyes used.

SIZE 

78" x 75" - modern twin size, or perfect to use as accent blanket on a larger bed or couch.
