Vintage Friendship Basket Applique Quilt, Kansas Quilt Project Documented, Embroidered 1935, 74" x 68"

 A lovely soft pastel quilt with documented dates and names! This Friendship Basket applique quilt has beautiful hand embroidered details on each unique basket, along with names and dates.

This quilt was registered with the Kansas Quilt Project in 1986. According to documentation, at that time it was owned by Lois Slater of Chanute, Kansas, the same town where I acquired the quilt. According to the Kansas Quilt Project Database, it was made by a group of friends in 1935.

MATERIALS

The quilt is made of 25 blocks of appliqued flower baskets - each with a unique style and hand embroidered details. There are lovely French knots, names, dates, and floral details on every block. It is set on white cotton fabric, and each block has a hand embroidered green border with yellow petals in each corner. It is hand bound with matching green fabric. There is utility hand quilting of parallel lines set across the whole quilt. There is cotton batting. The back is solid white fabric.

CONDITION

Fair vintage condition. There is mild fraying and wear on the binding, especially noted on the upper border. There is a large brown stain on one floral block and scattered light stains on front and back. There are some lost quilting threads. There is a small dime sized hole on the backing.

The quilt had been washed recently by the previous owner. Because of the large amount of hand embroidery, I opted to not wash this quilt or treat the stain, in order to preserve the quilt's condition. This is a wonderful quilt for every day use, picnic blanket, or repurposing.

Made in 1935, according to the quilted details and the Kansas Quilt Project database.

Measures 74" x 68" - a modern twin, or perfect size as an accent blanket.
