Vintage Purple & Green Heirloom Depression Era Quilt, c1930s, 80" x 72"

This is an expertly crafted Depression-era quilt, perfect for an antique quilt collection. The quilt is in an unknown pattern that has a stunning visual impact when viewed at a distance. The purple, yellow and green patches intersect to create a soft texture of light and dark, set against the white blocks. It creates the illusion of a floral motif without using actual floral designs.

The fabric and design places this quilt at circa 1930s.

MATERIALS

The quilt is a mix of hand and machine piecing. It is entirely hand quilted at 9-10 stitches per inch with white thread. The setting blocks feature incredible design of fiddlehead fern double line quilting. The patchwork has single line grid quilting in the white blocks and echo quilting along the patches. The sashing is bordered with purple and yellow fabrics, quilted in single line grid. The edge is scalloped, with echo quilting along the edge. It is hand bound in purple fabric.

CONDITION

The quilt has been gently hand washed and air dried. Some pencil marks from the maker are still visible, with one pencil smudge on one corner. There is light tanning along the center fold lines along the back. The backing is white fabric, and the batting is lightweight cotton, with no visible shifting or thinning.
