A vibrant red and white quilt with an unusual border and popular pattern.

MATERIALS

The quilt is constructed in the Double Irish Chain pattern in solid red and white fabrics. Unusual one patch on point border with two rows of red trim, setting off the blockwork nicely.

Bound in red fabric with unusual stitching along the entire edge in white thread, possibly to prevent early wear on the binding. It is hand quilted in white thread in a diagonal grid pattern on the blocks with clamshell motifs in center white blocks and along the edging, creating a nice contrast with the square patches.

Backing is white cotton. Lightweight cotton batting.

CONDITION

Good vintage condition. Moderate wear throughout binding. Scattered storage stains, especially along center fold along backing. Large light yellow area visible front and back. Some open areas in the corners over the red fabric. See photos. Otherwise clean and intact.

NOTE - when tested for color fastness, the red fabrics had some color bleed. Quilt has been aired out in the sun. I do not recommend washing. Free of odors.

AGE

Exact date unknown. Based on fabric and technique, estimated date made is circa 1930. It came from a private quilt collection in Kansas City, MO.

Measures 76" x 66".
