Vintage Yellow and Green Tulip Swirl Applique Sateen Quilt, c1930

A faded beauty with incredible tiny stitches, this is a perfect spring quilt for display and use.

MATERIALS

The quilt is constructed in the Tulip Swirl applique pattern, most likely from a mail-order kit. It features nine blocks of 8 tulips set in a swirl, with a double line border in yellow and cream, and additional appliqued tulips along the edge and corners. 

The material used is sateen in yellow, cream and green, on off-white setting fabric. Binding is matching yellow sateen, and backing is light yellow sateen. Lightweight cotton batting.

Very tiny expert hand quilting at 13-14 stitches per inch in white thread in small hanging diamonds and hand applique on the flowers. 

CONDITION

Good vintage condition. Fading throughout. One small area of pink nail polish spill. Light to moderate binding wear. Small brown marks on the backing. Otherwise clean and intact. See photos. It has been carefully hand washed and air dried.

AGE

Exact date unknown. Based on fabric and technique, estimated date made is circa 1870. Found in Pleasant Hill, MO.
