Vintage Zig Zag Quilt in Dress Silks and Fabrics, c1920
Vintage Zig Zag Quilt in Dress Silks and Fabrics, c1920
A lovely, spring-perfect quilt in unusual fabrics, this is a great collector's piece.
MATERIALS
The quilt is in the Zig Zag pattern, in alternating rows of light and dark pastel colors. The fabrics are a highly unusual of printed and solid silk organza, silk crepe, and cotton. Normally used for evening and special event dresses, it is rare to find a quilt made of these with the fabrics mostly intact.
Also notable is the inclusion of three blocks with printed words. These were likely taken from the selvage. The first 1/2 yard of the fabric was often printed with the company's information. These particular pieces were likely taken from "Finished Soft for the Needle". It was produced by the Lonsdale Company of Providence, Rhode Island. See photo at the end of listing for the source material. (Thank you to Barbara Garrett for providing this information and photo.)
Hand quilted in zig zag pattern echoing the blocks in white fabric. Border is cream and green printed silk. Binding is machine finished with tan and brown printed fabric. Backing is solid off-white. Lightweight cotton batting.
CONDITION
Good vintage condition. Not washed; I do NOT recommend washing this, as the fabrics will disintegrate. Some water stains visible on the quilt. Otherwise no major damage. Please see photos.
AGE
Exact age unknown. Likely made circa 1920 based on fabrics used. Found in Missouri.
SIZE
Measures 87" x 80".
