Available is a set of 2 antique French conversation plates from the "Voyages en Russie" series, plates VI and VII.

Each plates shows a different Russian scene. One is the "Parade of the Cossacks", showing a cavalry in full charge on horseback. The other shows a sledge cutting through snowdrifts on a winter day. The scenes are in black transfer, with bright cobalt blue designs around the edge of the plate. The back of the plate is stamped "Terre de Fer, HB & Co." Light crazing.

French conversation plates were popular decorative items throughout Europe in the 19th century. Plates were usually issued in sets of 6-12, with each plate showing a unique scene. Common themes included military events, provincial life, fables and legends, religious stories, and historical figures.

Today they make charming wall accents and hutch displays, continuing their role as conversation starters for a new generation of antique lovers.
